CGTN was compelled to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act in February 2019 and had its congressional press passes revoked. In February 2020 the State Department designated it one of five Chinese state media entities treated as foreign missions — a status normally reserved for embassies and consulates — requiring it to report staff names, turnover and property holdings to the Office of Foreign Missions. The designation carries no restriction on what CGTN may publish.

Major private providers dropped RT America in 2022, forcing it to cease operations. Furthermore, US tech giants have independently banned or restricted RT globally on their platforms. The US government also requires RT to register as a foreign agent under FARA.
Mississippi's HB 1126 requires social platforms to age-verify every user and obtain parental consent for minors. Bluesky pulled out of Mississippi entirely on 22 August 2025 rather than comply, then returned on 8 December 2025 as an 18+-only service in the state — adults must pass an age check and under-18s remain barred. Larger platforms had not implemented the checks while a Fifth Circuit appeal (NetChoice v. Fitch) remains pending.
Under the Texas App Store Accountability Act (SB 2420), app stores are mandated to implement age verification for users, restricting overall access to the NYT app in Texas.
